Equality Diversity and Inclusion

A culture of inclusion is reflected in Overstone’s vision and our school is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief and sexual orientation, age or socio-economic background. We aim to develop an inclusive and respectful culture where everyone can flourish.

 

The Equality Act 2010

 

We welcome our obligations under the Equality Act 2010 as it applies to schools as; providers of education to the pupils in their care, providers of a service or public function and as employers.

 

Our approach to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion reflects our school’s values and our obligations to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duties of the Act. As a result, we carefully consider and analyse the impact of decisions and school policies on equality and the possible implications for pupils with protected characteristics. This includes our requirement to have due regard to;

  1.  Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimization
  2. Advance equality of opportunity between different groups
  3. Foster good relations between different groups

Regulations associated with the Act introduced specific duties for schools:

     (a)  To publish information to demonstrate how they are complying with the Public Sector Equality Duty 

     (b)  To prepare and publish equality objectives

 

Our Equality Objectives

The Governing Body has set the following equality objectives for the four years commencing 2017. These will be monitored by the Governing Body regularly and reviewed annually.

Impact statement to be updated annually and uploaded to school website

Improve knowledge, skills and attitudes amongst staff and pupils in order to better recognise and appreciate difference and diversity in culture, religion and gender.

Training and continual professional development – constantly updating staff knowledge in order to enrich the curriculum
