Welcome

Welcome to our Governor’s Section

Overstone’s Governing body is a dedicated group of volunteers who meet regularly to share in the leadership and management of our school and resources. Its various members bring a wealth of experience from the wider world to their role and represent the many stakeholders that have an interest in the success of our school; the staff, parents, members of the local community and the Local Authority.

Members of the Governing Body may be contacted via the school office or school e-mail address available on the home page contact box.

 Role of the Governing Body

The role of the Governing Body is to act as a strategic leader of our school, the Headteacher has operational responsibility for the day to day running of the school. The law states that the Governing Body should “conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school”. In all schools, governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; this aspect of the role is often described as being a “critical friend”
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

What do the Governors do?

  • We work to ensure that the school has aims and values, which are clearly set out
  • Our core business is carried out in evening meetings and most governors also visit the school during the day at least once a term
  • As Governors we formally visit classrooms, talk to children and teachers and have meetings with staff members. The objective is to see that the aims and values are evident in the day to day operation of the school
  • At Overstone, we conduct much of our work through sub-committees and working groups who meet each term
  • We take an active role in supporting school events and activities
